An Overview of Film Schools

So you have decided to go a film school. That is very exciting news, but have you looked at all your options? Are you confused on where to start looking? Or even how to start looking? Well, read no further because this following discourse will do its best to help you find a film school that is right for you.

Let us begin with defining what makes an institution a film school. A school teaching film is any place that is dedicated to educating students on the aspects of film-making. This includes subjects such as film theory, film production, screenwriting, digital media production, and many more. Most film schools also incorporate film history as a part of their educational curriculum because it helps to put into context where the film community was, is and where it is headed as an entity. Technical training may also be included in some courses such as, but not limited to, correct operation of camera, appropriate use of lightning equipment, training in software that is used to edit video and audio, as well as video editing equipment and hardware. As one progresses through their years at a film school, they begin training in specific subjects such as broadcasting, audio engineering, television production and even animation.

The style of teaching at a film school has varied since it first started. Initially, formal teaching of film was prominent rather than practical technical training. Essays were used to analyze and critique films rather than a classroom environment. However, in 1890s, after the film making process was developed, technical training replaced formal teaching. By 1919, the Moscow Film School was founded with backings from numerous Russian filmmakers. As the 1920s came, commercial films became popular and technical training soon followed thereafter. Those seeking how to direct films and other technical aspects started at the bottom of the power pyramid and worked under more experienced individuals to get a foundation of the knowledge needed.

To this day, apprenticeship is a great way to get your foot into the film-making industry. The technical aspects of film-making and other related processes are easier to learn under the wing of an experienced individual rather than from a book and lecture. However, some people do prefer the book and lecture method to study, in which case, if it works it is great. Now that we have gained some insight into the history of film schools, let’s take a look at some film schools around the world.

Starting from the most prominent of film schools, there is American Film Institute, University of Southern California, Beijing Film Academy, University of California Los Angeles, The Film and TV School of the Academy of the Performing Arts in Prague, Wesleyan University, La Femis in France, and many more.

The great news is if you are planning to attend film school, there are a number of distinguished institutions all around the world with an even more distinguished amount of courses to choose from. Bon Voyage!

I acted in my first film almost 40 years ago and have been an actor since.
    1) What opportunities are there for sn old +60-yr-old actor to start learning film at such a renowned film school as UCLA. My ambition has always been to move to the other side of camera during my sunset years. I’d love tho direct if possible.
    2) Any grants or aid programs for senior citizens to start studying film at such institutions as UCLA?
