Choosing Film School For The Filmmaking Process
A film school can be a wonderful educational experience. For anyone interested in pursuing a career in film making, a formal education at one of the many film schools available can serve as the foundation for a successful film career. A film school can be attended on an on-campus basis or through distance education. There are basically two types of film school: on campus programs and online programs. Both types offer a comprehensive educational experience, but there are important differences that make each type slightly different from the other.
On-Campus Programs – On-campus film schools typically provide the most in-depth training and practical experience for budding filmmakers. A typical program will last anywhere from three months to two years. Students in these programs will learn everything from the basics of film production to the nuts and bolts of directing a film.
Coursework covered at on-campus programs typically includes technical studies like mathematics, computer science, film, graphic design, photography, and film history. Hands-on courses are also typically offered to students. These could include everything from script writing to character study, from physical actions of filming locations to technical aspects of directing a scene. Additionally, coursework may cover aspects of acting, lighting, photography, background design, and more.
Distance Education – Online film schools have also opened the door to those who would rather attend film school from the comfort of their home. Because of the ease of technology today, students can now study film online at their own leisure. They do not have to commute to class, and they do not have to pay the high costs of traditional film school. Instead of attending film schools in expensive cities like New York or Los Angeles, many students choose to study film online at schools offering courses at affordable prices. Some colleges even offer financing so that those with a low enough credit score can afford to take classes and earn a degree.
While technology has opened doors for many, it is still important to consider whether the course is a good fit for you. For example, many people interested in filmmaking might be better suited to be members of the film industry organization than to take classes that deal with conceptualizing a film idea or story, or organizing a shoot. Film school enrollment can also hinder creativity. Aspiring filmmakers should research the film schools that offer the programs that they wish to pursue, consider whether or not the credits will transfer over if they ever change careers, and look for schools that offer credits towards any other related degree programs.
There is no limit to the things you can do after you graduate from film school. Many courses are available for major project work and post-production efforts. In addition, you may start out as an assistant to a filmmaker and work your way up the ladder. Whatever path you choose, the filmmaking process is a rewarding one.
